SYNOPSIS OF CXC RESULTS 2019

This is a preliminary synopsis of the CXC Examinations results. It must be noted that CXC is presently making final checks and changes may be made before or by the end of the week.

Across the Territory 336 candidates were registered for the Caribbean Primary Exit Assessment (CPEA), 375 candidates were registered for Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations and 28 candidates were registered for the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) in the 2019 May/June sitting of CXC examinations.

Students entered in 28 CSEC subjects and 11 CAPE subjects in our Primary Schools, Secondary Schools, H.L. Stoutt Community College and as private candidates. 

CAPE
In CAPE, candidates entered to sit up to four subjects.  Grades 1 – 5 are recognised as passes in CAPE.  Our students performed exceptionally well in CAPE. Of the 2019 cohort who sat examinations, 5.3% received Grade 1 passes, 18.7% received Grade 2 passes, 12% received Grade 3 passes, 17.3% received Grade 4 passes and 29.3% received Grade 5 passes.   This equates to a 82.7% pass rate in CAPE.  The top performing subjects with 100% passes were Entrepreneurship Units 1 and 2, with candidates receiving only Grades 1 and 2 passes, and Biology Unit 2 with candidates receiving no lower than Grades 2 and 3 passes.  There were also 100% passes in Caribbean Studies and Chemistry.  Additionally, 95.5% of students passed Integrated Mathematics. 

CSEC
Students registered for at least one subject with 22 candidates registering for 7 or more subjects.  Students also performed well in the CSEC examinations. Of the 2019 cohort who sat examinations, 13.74% received Grade 1 passes, 28.98% received Grade 2 passes and 31.52% received Grade 3 passes.  This equates to 74.24% of candidates earning Grades 1 - 3 passes.  

There was a 100% pass rate in nine of the 28 subjects.  These subjects are:

1. Agricultural Science
2. Information Technology
3. Office Administration
4. Theatre Arts
5. Visual Arts
6. Family and Resource Management
7. Textiles, Clothing and Fashion
8. Food, Nutrition and Health
9. Industrial Technology Building

In six other top performing subjects, 90% or more candidates received Grades 1 – 3 passes.  These subjects are:

1. Chemistry – 90.3% pass rate
2. English B – 91.7% pass rate
3. Geography – 90.6% pass rate
4. Principles of Accounts – 92.9% pass rate
5. Electronic Document Preparation and Management – 98.1% pass rate
6. Physical Education and Sport – 98.9%

In the core subjects of Mathematics and English A: 62.5% of candidates received Grades 1 – 3 passes in Mathematics and 60.3% of candidates received Grades 1 – 3 passes in English A.

CPEA
The CPEA was used as the assessment instrument for the Grade 6 Key Stage Assessment. All Grade 6 students in participating schools were registered for Mathematics, Language Arts, Science and Social Studies.  The maximum points a student can attain is 500 points, which consists of 300 points for the subject examinations and 200 points for the school based assessments.  

In the Territory, Key Stage Assessments are reported as follows:

• Students earning 90% or more have achieved the “Mastered Attainment Target” level.
• Students earning between 55% and 89% have achieved the “Met Attainment Target” level.
• Students earning below 55% have achieved the “Working Toward Attainment Target” level.

Based on the Key Stage Assessment grading scheme, 286 students or 85.1% earned a combined percentage of 55% to 89%, which is equivalent to the “Met Attainment Target” level.  Six students earned an overall percentage of 90% or above, which is equivalent to the “Mastered Attainment Target” level.  The highest overall score achieved is 463 points or 92.6%. 

For the Mathematics examination portion, which excludes the school based assessment, 140 students or 41.7% achieved the “Met Attainment Target” level, while only two students or less than 1% achieved the “Mastered Attainment Target” level.  The highest overall score attained for the Mathematics examination is 72 points or 96%.

For the Language Arts examination portion, 285 students or 84.8% achieved the “Met Attainment Target” level, and 15 students or 4.5% achieved the “Mastered Attainment Target” level.  The highest overall score attained for the Language Arts examination is 69 points or 92%.

For the Science examination portion, 254 students or 75.6% achieved the “Met Attainment Target” level, and ten students or 3% achieved the “Mastered Attainment Target” level.  The highest overall score attained for the Science examination is 72 points or 96%.

For the Social Studies examination portion, 243 students or 72.3% achieved the “Met Attainment Target” level, and 16 students or 4.8% achieved the “Mastered Attainment Target” level.  The highest overall score attained for the Social Studies examination is 72 points or 96%.
