Press Release
World Teachers Day is being observed on Wednesday, October 5 under the theme, ‘Valuing Teachers, Improving their Status’.
The annual observation by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) marks the adoption of the UNESCO/International Labour Organisation Recommendation concerning the status of teachers. According to the UNESCO website, the recommendation highlights “the rights and responsibilities of teachers as well as international standards for their initial preparation and further education, recruitment, employment, teaching and learning conditions”.
Secretary General of the BVI National Commission for UNESCO Dr. Allison Flax-Archer said, “Teachers are integral to laying the foundation of an educated society,” adding, “UNESCO’s mission for contributing to peace and security through education is only possible with teachers and the relevant support they require. This is why World Teachers’ Day focuses on valuing teachers and the work they do.”
Dr. Flax-Archer echoed a recent statement by the Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Myron V. Walwyn in saluting teachers, stating, “On World Teachers’ Day, let us join together in saluting teachers for their significant contribution.”
A special GIS Radio Report interview with Dr. Flax-Archer and long serving educator Mrs. Phillis George will be broadcast on the afternoon of Wednesday, October 12 on all local radio stations and the televised interview will be uploaded to the Government of the Virgin Islands’ YouTube channel and Facebook page.
The BVI Teachers Union has planned a number of activities for Teachers Week including an Open House at various schools on Wednesday, October 5; and Happy Hour at Aromas at Tortola Pier Park on Friday, October 7, at 6:00 p.m. A bowling tournament is scheduled for next Thursday, October 13, at the Save the Seed Energy Centre.
The Ministry of Education and Culture is committed to ‘Creating a Culture of Excellence’.
