Deputy Premier and Minister for Environment, Honourable Julian Fraser, has warned against the rising sand mining activities at Long Bay, Beef Island, and other areas like Capoon’s Bay, highlighting the damage to beaches and restoration efforts. Sand mining is illegal under the Beach Protection Ordinance, 1985, with offenders facing fines, imprisonment, and forfeiture of equipment. The Ministry, supported by the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force, is increasing beach monitoring, installing educational signage, and has sought to temporarily close beach access at Little Mountain Estate to prevent further mining.
