Statement from Honourable Sharie de Castro

Minister of Education, Youth Affairs & Sports at the Elmore Stoutt High School Graduation

Wednesday 27th June, 2024

Today, we gather to celebrate a momentous occasion, the culmination of years of hard work, dedication, and perseverance. As I stand before you today as Minister, alumna and former teacher, I am filled with immense pride and joy as I witness the beginning of a new chapter for this remarkable group of young individuals.

Imagine, if you will, that your life is a race. Each segment represents your experiences, decisions, triumphs, and setbacks, all contributing to the unique journey that is yours alone. When you first arrived at the Elmore Stoutt High School, you were like runners at the starting line, full of potential, each with your own pace and stride. Over the years, you have run your race with the guidance of your teachers, the support of your families, and the camaraderie of your peers.

This race has seen many phases. There were times when the terrain was rough, and challenges tested your resolve. But through each obstacle, you learned the importance of perseverance and patience. There were also moments of joy and success, where your achievements added exciting milestones to your journey.

But let us remember, a successful race is not run alone. It requires the collective effort of many. To the principals and teachers, you are the coaches who have trained these runners with wisdom, guidance, and discipline, creating athletes who are strong and inspiring. Your dedication has crafted an environment where students can thrive. Educators, thank you.

To the parents and guardians, you are the support team who have provided sustenance and encouragement. You have cheered from the stands and ensured that these young runners have a solid foundation from which to run their race. Today, I acknowledge you.

Class of 2024, as you prepare to begin the next leg of your race, you carry with you not just the memories of your past, but also the skills and values that will help you navigate new and exciting courses wherever you go. You have learned the importance of hard work, the necessity of developing your talents and gifts, and the value of innovation and collaboration.

Speaking of races, let us draw inspiration from one of our very own, alumnus of the Elmore Stoutt High School, Kyron McMaster, a World Championships silver medalist who will compete at the Paris Olympic Games this year. Kyron's journey in athletics is much like yours. Kyron faced numerous hurdles! This can be likened to the changes and challenges you will encounter on this track called life but never stop running! Class of 2024, Kyron's success did not come overnight; it was the result of years of perseverance, training, and belief in his abilities. Let Kyron’s journey inspire you to keep running forward, no matter how tough the race ahead may seem.

As you move forward, remember that you are the runners of your own future. Pace it with care, fill it with strides of kindness and integrity, and pursue your dreams with determination. There will be new challenges and new courses, but you are well-equipped to handle them. Your time at the Elmore Stoutt High School has prepared you to face the world of work or college with confidence and grace.

In closing, Class of 2024, on this track called life, never stop running! Stay in your lane, pursue your purpose and passion, and run with drive and determination! Congratulations, Class of 2024!
